Stranger / 見知らぬ人
ネット上にアップした自分の過去をさかのぼり、まったく記憶にない言葉をランダムに描画した。自分は覚えていないのにネット上には鮮明に記録が残っている。私は自分のことを変わらない私だと思っているのに、かつて私だった者を私とは思えない。 本作は他人のような私の自画像である。
本作は、マンガ制作のために錬成した一万を超すAI絵の中から、自身がマンガに使わなかった絵を選び、トレースして制作している。効果音としてのオノマトペは、AIで制作したものを同じくトレースして使用したが、思い通りのものは出力できなかったものをそのまま使用している。 2024年現在、AI画像には著作権はなく、トレースして使用することには問題はないが、AI絵の裏側には望まず学習データにされた多くの作品がある。ヒトが学習する時も、他者の成果物を参考にすることがほとんどだ。しかし、AI学習に対して、ヒトの学習と同様に受容しきれないのは、その能力があまりにもヒトの能力を凌駕しているからだろうか。 世界の現代アートが担っている役割は、日本では「マンガ」が担ってきたと私は考えている。日本のマンガが取り扱うテーマは現代社会から未来への幻想まで幅広く、誰もが手に取りやすく分かりやすい形式で作られているため、難解で教養が必要な現代アート作品と比べて、鑑賞者に寄り添う姿勢がある。マンガは「書と日本画の配置」によって生じる物語であり、作品とは作家が意図的に「選択」し「配置」することによって生み出される発明である。 自分が忘れ去り、どこかで学習元にされているかもしれない自身の言葉にAI画像を組み合わせ、配置することによって生み出された本作は、Oumaの作品であり、著作物である。
I retraced my steps into the past I had uploaded onto the internet, drawing words I have no memory of. Despite having no recollection, these words remain vividly recorded online. I think of myself as unchanged, yet I can hardly recognize the person I once was as myself. This piece is a self-portrait of me, as if I were a stranger.
This work is created by selecting and tracing over AI-generated images, among over ten thousand crafted for manga production, that I did not use for manga. The onomatopoeia, also produced by AI, were traced and used as well, incorporating those that did not turn out as intended. As of 2024, there are no copyrights on AI images, making it unproblematic to trace and use them. However, many works involuntarily became learning data for these AI images. Just like humans learn mostly by referring to the works of others, the reluctance to accept AI learning in the same manner might stem from its capabilities far surpassing those of humans. I believe that what contemporary art represents in the world is what 'manga' has represented in Japan. Japanese manga, covering themes from contemporary society to fantasies about the future, is made in an accessible and easy-to-understand format, offering a more approachable stance to viewers compared to contemporary art pieces that require erudition and are difficult to decipher. Manga tells stories through the arrangement of writing and Japanese painting, and a work is an invention created by the artist's deliberate 'selection' and 'arrangement'. This work, combining and arranging AI images with words I have forgotten or might have been used as learning material unknowingly, is a creation and copyrighted work of Ouma.
