本作は、生命の最小単位である「細胞」をモチーフとして制作をつづけるOumaによる「集合生命」の表現で、朽ちていく姿に美を見出す「侘び寂び」の美意識を踏襲している。集合生命とは、細胞が集まりあって多細胞になり、一つのヒトという生命を構成しているように、ヒトが集まって町ができ、町が集まって国、国が集まって世界を構成していることを表すOumaの造語であり、細胞の世界と社会は相似の関係にあることを意味している。
本作では和紙と韓国紙でつくられた8つのコンパートメントを天井から吊るし、コンパートメントからは色のついた紐を垂れ落ちる。これらは、細胞膜に包まれた細胞の表現であり、鑑賞者は細胞内に入り込むことができるとともに、垂れた紐を結び付けたり、本体となるコンパートメントを自由に破ったりすることにより、作品全体の構成に関わることができる。本作は展示期間中に、訪れる人々同士で影響を与え合いながら、大きく形を変えていく。
本作は2018年から2019年にかけて、日本と韓国で合計3回展示発表された。この時期は日韓関係が史上最悪と言われるほどに悪化した時期だったが、私は2018年から2019年の間に韓国のアーティスト・イン・レジデンス3箇所に参加し、多くの展示機会や学びの機会をいただき、現代アーティストとして非常に重要な経験ができた。
インターネットやニュースで見聞きする情報は、現実のごく一部でしかなく、しかし、繰り返し見聞きすることで、まるでそれが現実の全てであるかのように錯覚することがある。「結ぶ」という行為は、日本では絆をつくる時にも使われる言葉である。鑑賞者は誰かの創造の痕跡を作品の変化から感じ取ることができ、それがまた自身の創造の手助けとなる。本作はこのように、他者を想像しながら、共同作業によって創作しつづけるダイナミズムそのものであり、平和への祈りを込めたインスタレーションである。
Ouma's motif of art is CELL which is minimum unit of life in biology. "Life Continuous" expresses WabiSabi which is Japanese sense of beauty like seeing the beauty in decay. Cells forms multicellular creature and became human-being. People forms towns, towns forms countries. Thus, cell's world is similar to society.
8 compartments which made of Japanese and Korean papers, hang down from the ceiling. Colored strings fell down from the compartments and viewer can touch and tie them up freely. They even can tear up main compartments. So, this installation was changed the shape dramatically during exhibition.
"Life Continuous" has been shown 3 times from 2018 to 2019 in Japan and South Korea. The relationship between Japan and South Korea was getting worst ever in 2019. However, Ouma joined 3 artist in residencies in South Korea from 2018 till 2019. Ouma got a lot of chances to have exhibition and visit local during residency and appreciate to have very important experience as a contemporary artist.
The information we can see news or on the Internet shows just part of reality but we sometimes fall under the delusion that the information reflects whole reality by touching same information repeatedly.
Tied up means making bond in Japanese. Viewer can see the trace of somebody's creation through this installation and also, that helps them to do their next creation. "Life Continuous” stimulate our imagination to be considerate of someone's existence and dynamism itself to keep making by co-creation. This contains a wish for the peace.
